Application Design 1
Instructions
Week-1
Mr Shamsul briefed us about the module application design and told us
about the upcoming tasks that you have to do which are:
1. PROJECT PROPOSAL
2. UI/UX DOCUMENT
3. LOW FIDELITY PROTOTYPE
4. HIGH FIDELITY PROTOTYPE
Week 2 Usability: Designing Products for User Satisfaction
Usability is a way to measure how easy a product is to use. It is a concept in design circles to ensure products—whether
Applications, websites, furniture, or hotel lobbies—can be used as
simply and painlessly as possible
There are 5 principles of usability
- Scale
- Visual hierarchy
- Balance
- Contrast
- Gestalt
Week - 2 exercise - Designing a paper prototype
For a better way of showcasing the map design and accessibility of the
navigation throughout the better for less confusion of the students to
find classes, we had to create a paper prototype of the Taylors mobile
application.
Week 3 - Find the problems of 3 applications and showcase it in Miro or
figma
Laws of UX presentation of the selected application
Self-Directed Class
-
Choose one of the mobile app that you have selected for the potential
topic for your project.
-
Conduct an initial evaluation of the product's UX design. Take note of
the product's layout, visual design, user flow, and other key UX
elements.
-
Research the UX Laws and theories that are relevant to your analysis.
This may include the Doherty Threshold, Fitts's Law, Hick's Law, the Law
of Common Region, the Law of Proximity, the Law of Similarity, the Law
of Uniform Connectedness, Miller's Law, the Serial Position Effect, Von
Restore Effect, and Zeigarnik Effect.
-
Create a checklist or an outline to guide your analysis. Use the
principles and theories you researched to develop a set of criteria that
the product should meet in order to provide a good user experience.
-
Conduct a thorough analysis of the product's UX design. Use your
checklist or the outline to evaluate the product's UX design and take
note of any areas that could be improved.
-
Write a report summarizing your findings. Your report should include a
detailed analysis of the product's UX design, a list of strengths and
weaknesses, and recommendations for how the product could be
improved.
- Create a visual presentation of your analysis. You can use Google Slides to create a presentation that summarizes your findings and recommendations.

Week 4 - card sorting methods
Design a card sorting for a health and fitness application
Week 5 - creating user personas
Scenario:
You are designing a mobile app for a local coffee shop that allows customers to order and pay for their coffee and food ahead of time, and pick it up at the store.
To create user personas for this app, you can follow these steps:
Identify the different types of customers who might use this app. Based on your assumptions and prior knowledge, brainstorm a list of different types of customers.
For example, you might come up with the following:
Busy professionals who want to save time by ordering and paying for their coffee and food ahead of time.
Students who need to grab a quick coffee and snack in between classes.
Parents with young children who want to avoid long wait times in line.
Coffee enthusiasts who want to customize their orders and try new menu items.
Elderly customers prefer the convenience of ordering from their phones rather than standing in line.
For each type of customer, create a user persona that includes the following information:
Name: Give each persona a name that represents their personality and background.
Demographics: Include details such as age, gender, occupation, income, education level, and location.
Goals and motivations: What are the goals and motivations of this persona? What drives them to use the app?
Pain points and challenges: What are the pain points and challenges that this persona experiences when using the app?
Behaviors and preferences: How does this persona typically interact with the app? What are their preferences for using it?

Week 6 - User journey map
Activity
Choose a persona: Start by choosing a persona.
Define the user journey: Identify a specific task or goal that your persona wants to accomplish using your mobile app. For example, if your app is a mobile app for a local coffee shop, the task could be ordering coffee.
Map the user journey: Draw a timeline with different stages of the user journey, starting from the user's initial awareness of the app to the completion of the task or goal. Include touchpoints and interactions the user may have with the app at each stage.

Task - 1 Proposal presentation
Students are required to create a proposal document for their mobile
application project. You are required to redesign
an existing mobile application that you find unsatisfactory in terms of the user experience or interface design and its subject to preliminary approval by the module coordinator. The document will determine whether or not the mobile application idea is good to continue to the next development phase.
Below is the outline of the proposal:
Introduction
Introduce the purpose of the proposal.
Explain the importance of mobile application design and how it impacts user experience.
Background and Context
Describe the existing mobile application and its current design.
Analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the current design.
Explain the user demographics and user needs of the application.
Goals and Objectives
Define the objectives of the redesign.
Identify the primary and secondary goals for the new design.
Explain how the new design will address user needs and improve user experience.
User Research
Describe the user research methods you will use.
Explain how you will gather user feedback and insights.
Provide a plan for user testing and validation.
References
Include any references used for research and inspiration, such as articles, books, or design examples.
