TASK 3A: TYPE DESIGN & COMMUNICATION
Lectures
WEEK 9
During week 9, we were given feedback on our font sketches and digitization process.
During week 9, we were given feedback on our font sketches and digitization process.
WEEK 10
During week 10, we got further feedback on our final digitized fonts on
Illustrator and were briefed on upcoming task 3B.
Instructions
Task 3A / Type Design And Communication
This task is divided into two parts; 3A and 3B.
This task is divided into two parts; 3A and 3B.
For the task, we are required to design a limited number of
western alphabets. To begin, choose an existing font design that adheres
to the direction that we would like to head in. Study the font carefully
by analyzing its anatomical parts.
We will endeavor to create a typeface that has the hallmarks of a good
typeface; subtlety, character, presence, legibility, and
readability.
These are the letters we have to design
a e t k g r i y m p n ! # , .
The first step to achieving this is to draw sketches, But inorder to get
it right, we got to look for visual research of various fonts out there.
But I did'nt do it at first and I thought it was easy and just went ahead
a sketched some fonts in illustrator
Then the lecturer saw this and laughed.....He said I obviously didn't
watch the videos or did any visual research
HE was right, I didn't do both lol
So I started researching a bit
after watching the instruction videos and doing some visual research I drew some sketches in photoshop
|
| First sketches 24.05.2022 |
But I wasn't quite satisfied with this, so observed more fonts and
sketched some again
|
| further sketches (27.05.2022) |
This time Instead of making a font completely from scratch, I used some similar fonts to the shapes and sizes right
I liked how the fourth one ended up so I decided to further digitize that
one
I got the inspiration form the font 'sean Henrich ATF extra bold'
Then I started to remake it with the pen tool in illustrator
The first letter took about ten minutes to get right... I realized that this wasn't easy as I expected
Further progress
After exporting all the letters, I opened a new metrics tab and adjust
the kerning and letter spacing indvidually.
Then I exported the font as a .ttf file
Gdrive font file .ttf :
FEEDBACK
Week 8
General Feedback: Feedback is not provided due to not having classes (Independent Learning Week)
Specific Feedback: Feedback is not provided due to not having
classes (Independent Learning Week)
Week 9
General Feedback: Do more research on different fonts, watch the recorded videos as provided,
Specific feedback: Make sure that you use other fonts as reference
or else the fonts will be inconsistent. redraw all of the sketches and put
the previous sketches on the blog. #1 and #2 are not consistent at all,
the sketches in photoshop are a bit consistent but need to explore
more.
Week 10
General Feedback: There is a huge improvement in the sketches, unlike last week, well done.
Now proceed to the digitization of this font
Specific feedback: the letters are fairly consistent, The font is also thick enough for
readability and style.
Experience
Typography task 3A was the most difficult project so far in the typography
module, My time management was messed up because of this project. The
sketching was quite easy and fun, but when it comes to digitizing the sketch
in illustrator, I struggled a lot to get every letter properly formed. I
cannot say it was a pleasant experience designing this but I'm glad that I
did.
Observation
I got to create a font by myself for the first time, and I also got to
learn more about adobe illustrator and FontLab 7. After this project, I kind
of understand how a font should properly have kerning, letter spacing, and
alignment. I explored lots of random typefaces to find one I liked so I made
a different font by learning what characteristics that font had.
Findings
I got to know that digitizing a font is harder than We think, every single
change can cause a difference or inconsistency in a letter, I hope I don't
have to do this again mainly because I am not a big fan of shaping and
adjusting a letterform. The typeface I made is not perfect, There are some
deformities that I would like to change if I had more time, But overall I'd
say I'm a bit satisfied that I dome something I once thought was impossible
to do in such a short amount of time.
