Project 1 / Self-Portrait

Project 2 - This is a project where we have to make use of the design principles that we learned along the way. We have to choose a location of our choice, the place becomes the subject of our composition and we have to capture the environment we have been to before.

I want to draw a beautiful place I have been to that left some good memories

Lectures
INTRODUCTION
A designer’s goal is to solve problems with effective visual communication. There are plenty of problems that designers solve ranging from personal goals to community events, and from corporate functions to world changing projects.

IMPORTANCE OF OBSERVATION
The client informs the designer of the purpose of the project but when it comes to visual ideas, how do designers work?

This is where observation plays an important role. Being observant means being attentive to your surroundings, paying attention to the details, and being analytical about them.

Observing is an active act of acquiring information, through the senses, about a subject matter in its natural setting. We need our senses to know, feel, understand, analyze and even plan what we want to do.

For a designer, observation can be an effective way to get ideas. Sources of observation can stem from artifacts, daily happenings, physical surroundings, and so on.
-Observation is important to designers as it enables them to see problems, as well as get ideas for solutions to those problems

SENSE OF PLACE

Think about the place you’re in now or a place you had spent some time at previously or a place that had created a lasting memory in you.

How do you express your sense of that place?

Start by documenting your observations - photographs, diary, talking to relevant people, etc.

Sense of place
I had an image in my head that I'm resting under a tree In a calm, serene environment with trees, mountains, and a river

So I started visual research of a man sitting under a tree

Used as the reference of the silhouette

I used this Image to draw a silhouette of myself in photoshop

Then I drew the tree much bigger and better

I drew some simple objects to make it look better and I drew a river beside the tree

Opposite the man, I drew some trees on the other side of the river

Then i drew a mountain and some more trees far away

Then I drew two more mountains and the sky

FINAL VERSION

The reason I chose this place is that These kinds of places make me feel like I'm on top of the world. Although I have been to a few places like this, I drew these mountains, trees, and rivers from What I pictured in my head, whilst I used some references for the tree shading, The scenery you see above probably doesn't exist in the real world

Feedback
Week 9: While drawing the silhouette, ms jinchi told me to reduce the size of the man or me, so that I can emphasize the beautiful nature more, Plus she instructed me to use references so that I don't waste lots of time

Reflection
Honestly, I didn't even have to think about what to draw cuz I already knew that if I'm going to draw sense of place, This is it, This is what is pictured in my mind in the first place. My drawing skills are at a beginner level but I'm glad that for the first time, I was able to draw scenery and mountains properly, I'm actually quite happy with this although the artwork is not an amazing work itself. This required patience to draw but Somehow I finished it in time because I put my laptop on the balcony outside to see the sky, and trees and feel the wind. It made me calm enough to draw this in a short time.
