Final Project - Visual Analysis: Students are to utilize their understanding of design principles found in the design work. This project requires the students to assess, investigate, document, and analyze a design material (billboards/television commercial/movie clip/work of design) of their choice. They should notice, size, placement, purpose, and effectiveness, as well as aspects of design principles found in that work.
Thereafter, they are to produce a work of design, inspired/influenced by the one they studied, or as a reaction to it. They should also apply knowledge of design principles in their design.

We have to choose a work of art to study and analyze to further move on with our final project
I chose to use The Exhibition of hibakusha A-bomb experiences painted by Hiroshima students to open in Tokyo

A painting of a young mother bearing her dead son is seen in this image provided by the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum.

 Observation

This artwork is in a portrait format, the art style is more towards realism and shows a dark smoke-covered background and the focus is on the woman and child covered in blood and wounds. The colour style is vintage. And the painting style used could be oil paint.

Analysis

The artwork portrays a moment in the past that shows the aftermath of the horror of war. The emphasis is on the wounded mother and her dead child that she's carrying on her shoulder. The clothes of the mother and child are torn due to the atomic bomb explosion that took place a few hours ago. You can also see a belt-like cloth that the woman tied to her body to carry the deceased child. The woman has a wound on her forehead that is bleeding down to the face and also there are some wounds on the shoulder and arms. She is also covered in mud and dirt due to the damage to the environment and herself. The style of painting is also very detailed and it looks close to real life. The background is coloured with a dark and mild brown palette and it can help show the sorrow and cruelty of this world. The mother's face is the most important part of this work, You can see in her face that she's hopeless, afraid, and vulnerable.

Interpretation

The artwork by kana tsumura and other Hiroshima students was presented at an exhibition of paintings of the August 1945 U.S. atomic bombing of Hiroshima created by high school students, based on testimony from survivors. It was shown on July 19 2019 at the ArtGraph Gallery in Tokyo's Ginza district.

In 2007, a school in Hiroshima, western Japan, initiated an atomic bomb painting project in response to the aging of hibakusha. Over 100 items have been created since its inception. The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum keeps the paintings, and they've even been utilized as presenting aids when hibakusha talk about their experiences in public.

Female survivors of the atomic bombings experienced greater instances of illness and death.  And, they faced harsher societal discrimination after the bombings. Radiation exposure was linked to an increase in stillbirths, miscarriages, premature births, birth abnormalities, and growth issues, according to one study. Another research finds that exposure to radiation accelerates menopause.

This picture shows the horrific side effects of war and how they impacted a typical family. It's painful to see a mother lose her child unexpectedly. I chose this because I thought it was really insightful and it effectively depicted what happened on the day of the Hiroshima bombing. People still continue to suffer as a result of the effects of radiation on the environment, and yet people claim that they do not dislike whoever caused this to them.

How does this show inequality?

Many people have killed in world wars in the past, but the Hiroshima bombing deaths still stand out as one of the largest mass genocides in history. They were just regular citizens who were not involved in the conflict between the nations. Even now, they are still suffering as a result of the bombing. It was a typical city with nice people. On that particular day, folks were just chatting and children were playing in the streets when an explosion abruptly wiped everyone out, including the city they lived in. That day, a lot of women lost their kids, leaving a lot of youngsters and infants orphans. These people did not deserve such a painful fate, thus I'm still deeply saddened by what happened.

To create a work of design of my own, I looked at some other artworks related to this

Then I started sketching out my ideas

People happily talking not realizing that they're going to die in a few seconds
two kids learning in a class while the explosion is shown out the window

A little girl holding her mother but she's already blown into pieces

A decapitated mother trying to move towards her child and there are many dead bodies and exploded buildings in the background
A burned mother holding her baby to protect it from the heatwaves of the bombing

First, I chose to go with the one on the top with a mother holding the boy and the explosion in the background

First I dew the nuclear explosion using Artificial intelligence tools, This artwork is completely new and drawn by AI

Then I drew the silhouette of the mother and child using photoshop

After the feedback with the lecturer, she said it could be much better with new idea exploration and sketches.

Then ms jinchi suggested using the sketch where the mother is holding the infant baby in her hands to protect it from the explosion

also, I decided to make it smaller and a bit to the right so I could show the explosion of the left

After that, I added some details

Now I have to draw the nuclear explosion. So I decided to draw a new one using AI again

Final result

This work of art displays the depth of a mother's love for her kid, showing her willingness to risk her life to shield them from harm. Hundreds of thousands of people were killed in the Hiroshima explosion, and many children also lost their parents as a result. I tried my best to accurately represent the nuclear explosion in this piece of art as a memorial to the Hiroshima bombing. I hope you like it.

FEEDBACK

Week 13
The explosion is beautifully done, but more concept sketches are needed. Additionally, describe how this piece of art reflects inequality.

Week 14
Well done on the new sketches; now you should say what you have in mind for this piece of art. For the final outcome, you should proceed with the mother holding the young child.

REFLECTION
This last project was one I really enjoyed working on, and I was also looking forward to completing it so I could take a break from the previous 14 weeks of hard work. This assignment taught me how to evaluate a picture and write about it. I was able to experiment and produce my own art as a result. The artwork in its final form is far from flawless, but I only wanted to express my ideas. This might have been explored and enhanced if I had more time, but as it stands, it's not terrible. Because of the wonderful facilitator and enjoyable assignments, this module was my favorite this semester.
