Lecture 6 - Self-Portrait

After the weekly exercises finished, we had to move on to project 1-self portrait.

At the start of the lecture, the lecturer asked us how I view my interests, thoughts, experience, how others view me and how I view myself. I know how I view myself but I had no idea how others viewed me as a person, Barely anybody knows the actual me inside.

In this self-portrait, I had to show me, my interests and what's on my mind

I'm kind of a shy person and it takes a while for others to see inside the actual me. So I decided to create a self-portrait that shows me giving the viewer an enigmatic gaze

First I found an interesting idea to draw myself in an odd postion, but I chose to change the design because it doesn't show much of anything related to me.

So I thought it through and started exploring the ideas

Visual research
I didn't want to make a boring self-portrait where I just sit in a chair with a blank background.
I wanted an interesting angle to show myself so I started visual research

To make this, I first need a reference of my face to get the shape right, but I barely take photos of myself mainly because I don't like posing in front of a camera. I used a photo that I took a while ago so I will use that for reference

But the angle I want to create is a bit more different so I sketched It out first

Then I sketched It again neatly, and little by little I started to see progress

Then I started colouring and refining the picture more, But since it's a different angle than the image I used, it was a bit hard to draw further. So I put a mirror in front of me and then continued drawing.

After a lot of polishing and adjustments, I finally kind of got the artwork I pictured

Final version

This is me looking out from under an intriguing, glass-like thing. You can only see the left side of my face, which illustrates how people only see the left side of my face when they first meet my eyes. Because I'm quiet and introverted, it takes me a while to warm up to the other half.

In this portrait, there is a thin, delicate line of sunshine that is scattered on my face. This shining spot can draw attention to the eye and make eye contact with the viewer. It's also possible that when I gaze into the eyes of this painting in the future, my older self will be able to see myself, almost like a mirror.

Reflections

In this week's project. I found out that was a bit harder than the other ones and consumed lots of my time. It took a while to get proper inspiration because of the overwork in the other modules. But I somehow figured it out to finish it in time. This project was a good opportunity to explore myself and my personality, It was a nice experience to actually make a portrait of myself and see the result afterwards. I could've spent more time on this but It's not beneficial to focus on this project alone.
